  • My guess is, Gytras's body isn't dead, but just in the infirmary in a comatose state. The captain's reaction would be more direct crying if they had died, I think, so he's likely mentally struggling with the guilt of getting Gytras hurt over one of his requests. This setup is likely a fastball way to push their relationship forward so that you end up with an even split of a male/male couple, a female/female couple, and a male/female couple by the comic's end.
This might also convince Gytras to be a bit more lenient on the captain's pervert tendencies.

Gytras goes exclusively by they/them as far as we know so far

  • I think, deep down, Kimera at least saw Gytras as a friend or a peer. For day-to-day stuff, Kimera is surrounded by subordinates, whom you don't chum around with, unless you've got something like a crusty ol' country doctor as a CMO or a logical, pointy-eared science officer as your second-in-command. We haven't seen anything like that among Kimera's crew, making them all just his men.

For anything else, Kimera's fellow captains likely thought he's an idiot and an embarrassment to the uniform. So did Command back home, when it still existed. Command is lonely, and Kimera would be lonelier than most.

He even has only two plushies that we can see. Granted, a ship doesn't allow one to keep a whole lot of possessions, but that means he's got to be extra choosy about what he can keep. Of the plushies, one isn't Kimera as he really is but is a fantasy Kimera, much like how we would imagine ourselves as a superhero, a monster, or something else more impressive than we really are. The other? Just Gytras. Someone he could pester and spend time with, who wasn't a subordinate and who couldn't jump off to another ship at the first opportunity and get away.

Or Kimera's just a plushophilic pervert, and he was crushing hard on Gytras. Same logic as above except far creepier.
