This week's fun animal fact: the Swell Shark is a small shark in the cat shark family that can be found off the coast of California and Mexico. It's called the Swell Shark because when threatened, it swallows so much seawater that its stomach balloons to twice its size.

I will be back next week with another fun animal fact.

  • Space fact of the week;

Rocky/terrestrial planets cannot form more than one large spherical moon, since as soon as one forms, it will consume the large majority of the material around its parent planet. Any other moons the planet may form will be small asteroid-like bodies.

Another thing about moon formation; they will form along the motion of rotation of the planet they orbit, think of the inner moons of the gas giants, where they follow the planet’s axial tilt. The only gas giant major moons to break this trend is Saturn’s moon Iapetus, where it’s on a distant, less inclined orbit, and Neptune’s moon Triton, which is on a highly-tilted retrograde orbit.

what happens if there's two separate moon-sized blobs of rock? do they eventually cannibalize eachother to form one moon or do they live in peace?

Gravity perturbations end up either ejecting one of the bodies from the system (possibly also sending both the moons and the planet they orbited on trajectories that cause their demise), or nudges it into a collision with the other body — which also may cause the demise of the remaining planet and moon. A lot of these kinds of planetoids and moons form early in the life of a solar system, and end up being ejected from their host star systems. Many of these so-called Rogue Planets are thought to be floating out there in interstellar space, cold and dark, with no stars to give them light or heat.

  • Its awsome that over the years more and more people have been here to comment about a type of facts when the comic is finished and if there wil be a physical copy sold we need a couple of pages at the end with the best facts trough the years

  • Half Life fact of the week (slightly less boring than the last too!!):

Near the end of HL2: Episode 2 (specifically in the first room of the bunker right after defeating the attacking strider army) one rebel says “Good Job, Gordon!”, however his voice is actually that of Barney Calhoun (who doesn’t show up in Episode 2). This leads people to believe that Barney would’ve actually shown up here, rather than disappearing on a train in Episode 1 and not showing up after.

I’ll be back next week with another Half Life fact! (And also, really glad that I get to do this sort of thing, so thanks <3)

    actually

Rogue planets are likely caused by a larger body coming in close proximity to a smaller one, and ejecting it from the star system. This usually happens early in a system's history, typically while young planets have formed and the environment is more chaotic. Another way they can form is when a star system has an encounter with a nearby star, ejecting more planets, including those that are more massive.

If a moon is ejected from the orbit around its parent planet, it can either become another planet in the system, or depending on its orbit, size, mass, and clutter around its orbit, a dwarf planet. Or a rogue planet if it happens to be fully kicked out of its home system.

True, gravitational scattering by bigger bodies is probably the main way planets (and big moons) get yeeted into interstellar space especially in those chaotic early phases when everything's still settling down stellar flybys in young clusters add to the chaos too
What's cool is that some ejected moons might actually stick around their planet even after the whole system gets kicked out Recent studies suggest rogue planets can keep some of their moons and those moons could even stay habitable for billions of years thanks to tidal heating from elliptical orbits Dark frozen worlds with underground oceans? Kinda metal
also JWST has been finding more rogue worlds lately some with their own disks that might form mini planetary systems So not only do they get ejected they might go rogue with company
Any favorite rogue planet candidate or wild what if scenario for this

  • Seeing the people in the comments sharing facts about a certain topic, I think I'm gonna start doing game facts. Here's one:

Mega Man (known as Rockman in Japan) was originally going to be a game about Astro Boy (known as Atom in Japan); however, Capcom lost the rights to the character.

But Keiji Inafune, the creator of the Mega Man series, still wanted to make a game with a protagonist being a robot turned into a fighter, similar to the original Astro Boy idea. (that's why old Mega Man Japanese official art is reminiscent of the old Astro Boy art style)

Thus, the super fighting robot Mega Man/Rockman was born!

  • Did you know that most land-bound animals lost the ability to regrow our teeth, to having multiple types?

The reason we can't regrow them is some genetic science I know nothing about (So don't ask, I won't reply anyways), but largely boils down to it being too complicated for our DNA (Assumption) to store multiple blueprints for our teeth, and exactly where to grow them.

For humans this is due to our omnivorous diet, the aforementioned limitation would restrict us to being either purely herbivorous or carnivorous.

However, even primarily carnivorous land animals (Wolves for example) can't regrow their teeth.
This is again due to the limitation of only ing one type of teeth, where wolves have multiple.

A few species that have this trait (Known as "polyphyodonts") are sharks, most snakes, kangaroos, beavers, etc.
Scientists are attempting to replicate this trait in humans, and have successfully grow human teeth in pigs.
Next time your dentist yells at you about taking care of your teeth, remind them they'll be out of a job, likely in the next 100 years.

ed some of this random trivia info from a video I watched either earlier this year or last year.
Used google to expand on it a bit.

  • Adding my own facts now:
FUN VIDEO GAME FACTS: There are several unused sprites in Deltarune chapter 3 however the most interesting are 2 unused overworld sprites of Kris and Susie in the cowboy attire we see in the one minigame, seemingly implying there would have been a much longer sequence relating to the cowboy theme.

  • the fact that digi (the character) went on a (well informed) explanation about squirrels and nuts to make julie feel embarrassed, makes me feel like the artist knows about all the animal/aquatic/space/[insert topics here] facts that keep getting posted in the comments of the comic here (not specifically on this page, but the entirety of the comic overall)

might be a bit too reaching, but it feels like a small nod from the artist themselves. if so.....well played
