MemberDepending on breed, the life span of doves averages 7-15 years. Though there are examples of some living past 30. The majority of parrots, however, can live much longer: 50-70 years. Keeping parrots as pets is a serious and long-term commitment. Neither should their intelligence be underestimated; comparable to that of a 3-4 year old human. Imagine having a toddler for 50+ years. That can fly.

My mother accidentally killed him one day (trying to protect him, she tried to shoo him off my shoulder when she called me into her room, expecting him to fly into the living room, but he flew past her, into her room, and directly into the ceiling fan) and he died in my hands. MemberMakes me nostalgic for my budgie. I absolutely adored her; she never left my side when I was home, and was as quiet and gentle as a dove. My father killed her after three years when he thought it would be a good idea to clean her cage pan with bleach, then couldn't understand why I was mad, because "they only live about three years anyway" (they live closer to 20, for those who want to know), and "they're only a dollar at PetSmart, get another and you won't even miss it." It still makes me livid to think about.
