MemberIt's the Night Guard. Not bat ponies. The most common consensus I've found in fanfics is that when a pegasus s Luna's half of the Royal Guard there's some sort of ritual that changes them. Thus you get the slit pupils to enhance night vision (did you also know that slit pupils allow for color vision at night instead of basic black and white?). The bat style wings allow less for sustained long distance flight, where bat's wings are more for quick bursts of speed. Birds use their wings for travel, bats for hunting fast moving insects and such.
One of my theories is that they could have been given that appearance during NMM's uprising, allowing them greater in-flight agility, accuracy, and a look that would scare the hell out of the enemy.
As for the unicorn bartender, he's most likely part of the Lunar guard as well. The horn isn't the normal blunted spiral of a regular unicorn, it's black, sharp, and pointed. Ponies of all species would be in the guards of both the Solar and Lunar courts.
Also if you look the guard with the eye patch is an earth pony. The thing behind him that you see through the mug handle is actually his tail, same color as his mane, just in the shadows. Or I'm crazy.
