Description
Leopard in a Cage confronted by two Mastiffs

Oil on canvas

Jean-Baptiste Oudry's painting of a leopard was based on studies from the royal zoo, la Ménagerie, in the gardens of Versailles. When the artist saw the wild animals there, this royal zoo was in disrepair. The painting, which was done in 1739, was the last in a series of eleven, which Carl Gustaf Tessin bought that same year for the interior of Stockholm Palace. The purchase was heavily criticized when the works reached Sweden the following year.
