Description

The Irish elk, giant deer or megaloceros (Megaloceros giganteus) is an extinct species of artiodactyl mammal of the cervid family. Similar to a large fallow deer, its antlers measure up to 3.5 m from tip to tip. Although it lived throughout Europe and much of Asia from half a million years ago until its extinction in recent times, it is often popularly known as "Irish elk" due to the abundant finds of specimens preserved in the peat bogs of Ireland.

This giant fallow deer could reach a height of more than 2 m at the withers and weigh almost 750 kg.

Although it is popularly known as the Irish “elk”, it does not belong to the family of these but to that of fallow deer, deer and roe deer.
