Out of curiosity, what does it mean when it says that the bunn-e's can differentiate from each other when in groups? Does that just mean that they can modify themselves on their own?

I think you've pretty much got it sugar. All BUNN-Es come with a base-line personality and body, both of which tend to adapt a little; to better fit with their owner's needs/wants. However, in a group, they will differentiate from each other so as to not occupy/compete for the same sociological niche. I think the most visually-obvious instance is Joan, with all the extra metal. Jenny is a bit more subtle, with larger breasts and a softer tummy. All three have slightly different fur patterns if you look closely.

The BUNN-Es were wonderfully advanced in their abilities to self-maintain/modify using commonly-found household foods or chemicals. The EXACT catalysts/reasons for self-change are a bit nebulous, and not well understood. Back when you could simply ask them, most claimed it was "because they wanted to."

    Interesting thanks!
