Tonatiuh and Tezcatlipoca

Tonatiuh is the sun deity of the Nahuas. Nahuas believed that the world had been created multiple times with their respective suns. Tonatiuh is the last and current one. Some s add that the humble deity Nanahuatl sacrificed himself to become a new sun. Although eagle is often cited as a symbol of Tonatiuh, I chose the stag because deer is heavily associated with the sun in Nahua cosmology. For example, in page 33 of Codex Borgia, deer is depicted carrying the sun itself.

Tezcatlipoca is a trickster and supreme deity in Nahua religion. He played many central roles in their cosmology such as the creation of the sky and earth. As he was also a patron of warriors and kings, his cult was heavily promoted by the ruling class. Although Tezcatlipoca can shapeshift into various animals, he is most heavily associated with jaguars. When Tezcatlipoca takes a jaguar form, he becomes Tepeyollotl, the god of earthquakes. Codices usually depict Tepeyollotl as a regular jaguar, I chose a black jaguar because it matches with the color of the obsidian mirror (Tezcatlipoca translates to 'smoking [popoca] mirror [tezcatl]').
