In the US Presidential elections of 1912, a rift had formed between former friends Theodore Roosevelt and then-President William Taft. Roosevelt disagreed with many of Taft's more conservative policies, including the conservative Republicans' of high tariffs (represented by the dog Taft is carrying) to encourage domestic production, which would cause a rift in the Republican Party between Taft's conservatives and Roosevelt's progressives. This rift split the Republican vote enough for the Democrats to stand a chance and get Woodrow Wilson elected.
