no that is quite literally what happens

It's Echo's fault. Leo recovers with the good ending. Every narration hint across the routes points to Echo being the main source of everyone becoming the worst parts of themselves. Even Flynn's route briefly mentions Leo not being that aggressive or violent when they have an argument in Flynn's home. It's almost all Echo. Almost. If Leo lived anywhere else he'd most likely not have as many red flags or issues.

Please use the blackout option so that people who haven't played to game/gotten to that part don't get spoiled.

Not to mention that if we talking about red flags, friendly reminder that the protagonist did a SLIGHT, LITTLE, MINUSCULE, INSIGNIFICANT oopsie on the beach when young and did lore-wise enjoy it, no spoilers

That I agree with. People are like "Leo has so many red flags!" and I'm like "... Really? The one who murdered his friend is fine but the one who just wants to be loved is an issue?" Chase is more of a redflag than anyone, dude is literally a murderer. Leo isn't a murderer, I don't count the bad ending as truth.
