The moment the shuttlecock (or birdie) touches the floor, that's a point; and hitting it downwards is a point against yourself (the rat would lose that round in the middle ) because there's supposed to be a net to lob it over. Classic battledore, while played without a net, was a cooperative game, where the points are shared and you just keep it off the floor as long as you can.
