Ron doesn't want Malfoy to see that they've been turned into ponies.

    What is Hermione's cutie mark?

The artist said she probably would have given her a book and quill...

I think those are rather uninspiring though... If it were me.. hmm..

Harry doesn't get his cutie mark for several years, not until... 4th year, I think.. and it's the deathly hallows. No one knows what it means, except dumbledore.

Ron gets his at the end of first year. It's a trio of chess pieces. It's not about his strategy skill, it's about his loyalty to his friends.

Hermoine... is difficult. Everyone already knows she's good at books and learning, and it sells her short to have her cutie mark say "oh yeah, that think you've known about since you were tiny." or perhaps... SHe did get her cutie mark, years before arriving at hogwarts, a book, a pen, a quill, a scroll... and that's why she's so confident in herself. but... what if she got it after?

She wouldn't have gotten it with the troll. She didn't do anything in the 2nd year that was different that what she usually does. in her 3rd year, she had the time turner, but what would that represent? She was a sidekick on that mission. Valuable, but a side kick. And while Hermoine is Harry's side kick, she's the hero of her own story... perhaps some time in 5th year, when she's helping with Dumbledore's army. Perhaps near the end of the year, during the battle at the Department of mysteries? Perhaps in the years after, while they were on the run. I think her cutie mark is a wand, sparking with Magic. As, while she is valuable with knowledge, she is also skilled at doing. And I think any cutie mark that says that she is simply knowledge would sell her short.

After all, canon says that she eventuallybecomes the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement... and eventually, the Minister for Magic. She's far more than just knowledge, she's action.

Something relation to her activism with SPEW, I'd think.

    Nah.

    well..

    Actually... I coudl see that!

It's not SPEW or anything printed on her flank. Not a house elf or a sock or anything like that.

It's a pair of hooves holding a heart.

She hates it. What kind of dumb cutsey boo cutie mark IS that? The brightest witch of her age, and here she is with a HEART?

She spends hours pouring over books in the library. She keeps it secret as long as she can. It has to be a mistake. Surely SOMEONE else has gotten the wrong cutie mark before? There's got to be a ... a spell or a potion that would allow her to... to try again. to make it RIGHT!

She finds nothing. Just books singing about the glory of finding your special talent.

She's tried to keep it secret, but despite her best efforts, people have seen it. A glimpse before she puts her robes on. Disguising charms getting knocked off in the middle of charms class. Rumors, but no one can really BELIEVE that that Hermoine, of all ponies, has a heart cutie mark.

It's Snape that puts three and four together. His own unconventional cutie mark brought him a lot of grief as a child. he has no words of comfort or reassurance. She's an entirely too clever witch wasting her talent with those two blistering idiots. A muggleborn. He can't be kind, no. But he can, one day, ask her to stay a moment after class. A cold insult to the day's work--completely inadequate--before he's sliding a book over and asg her to write an essay on it. "No buts."

It's a book on cutie marks.

she's furious, but reads the book and writes the damned paper. She's never been so furious at homework before. Ron and Harry are a bit scared, but, well, it's Hermoine.

Snape can tell, right away, that she hasn't learned anything.

"20 inches on the the symbology of your cutie mark, Miss Granger."

    "I-I haven't got one."

He raised an eyebrow, "Do not lie to me."

Her stubborn fury is wiped away as he flicks his wand and with a single word, reveals the flank mark. "20 inches, By Monday."

By Monday, her world has changed.

She has an essay in her hooves after class, which he accepts with a chill look. "And have you learned anything?"

She has. Her cutie mark is about ing others. About justice and lost causes. About challenging the status quo because it's the right thing to do.

As she trots out of the room, Snape reflects: perhaps he understands her and her relationship with Potter and Weasley a bit better, now. perhaps.

    The essay is burned, unread.

A wand with a pen nib, and a parchment with a rune. One end of the wand sparkles, the other end is finishing the rume, likely one related to foresight or preparation
